Horses on the roads.

Now that the warmer weather has arrived we can expect to see more equestrians using the roads.

Here are some key points to remember if you come across a horse on the road:

Please slow down to a maximum of 10MPH

Please be patient- don’t rev your engine or sound your horn

Pass at a safe distance give at least 2 meters of space between your car and the horse if the road allows

Only pass the horse when it is safe to do so

Please do not accelerate quickly after passing the horse, drive away slowly.

“passing wide and slow” can help to avoid startling horses and can prevent accidents occurring- ensuring the safety of the horse, rider, and driver.

Riders-

Although it is not stated in the Highway Code, the importance of hi viz clothing being worn by horse and rider cannot be stressed enough! This improves how visible you are to oncoming traffic significantly, meaning there is more chance of traffic spotting you sooner and passing safely.
